Schema Focused Therapy
Schema Therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach used to treat a wide range of psychological issues.
It integrates many aspects of other approaches and has proven beneficial for those who have experienced trauma, PTSD or mental health conditions that have not responded to traditional psychotherapies such as CBT.
Schemas are beliefs we have about ourselves, the world, and other people which result from interactions of unmet need earlier in our lives. Schemas are made up of memories, bodily sensations, emotions and thoughts that originate in childhood and follow us through life.
The schemas targeted in this therapy include enduring and self-defeating patterns of repeated negative/dysfunctional thoughts. Such patterns can pose obstacles for accomplishing one's goals and getting one's needs met. Some examples of schema beliefs are: "I'm unlovable", "I'm a failure", "People don't care about me", "I'm not important", "Something bad is going to happen", "People will leave me", "I will never be good enough" and so on.
The Benefits of Schema Therapy include
• Improved quality of life and movement along your recovery pathway, rather than a sense of being 'stuck'.
• Development of psychological 'safety skills' to feel safe and keep yourself safe in your environment, build positive relationships, process trauma and perceive it as part of your life story, but not something that defines you.
• Develop coping skills and confidence.
• Experience fewer crises, and when you do encounter a stressful life event, you will have resilience to respond to it and engage support from others in a meaningful way.
What to Expect
At your first appointment, you will meet with a clinical psychologist trained in Schema Therapy. She will explore your concerns and together agree an assessment and treatment plan.
Over the following 4 to 5 sessions you will collaborate with the clinical psychologist on identifying areas that cause distress aiming to reach a point where you feel the issue has improved and is not significantly impacting on your life anymore.
